For much of its early history, the island of Manhattan was inhabited by
Algonquin Native American tribes. Dutch settlers came to the area in the early 17
th century, and the British claimed the area in 1664. The British named it
"New York" after the Duke of York. After the American Revolution,
New York's population increased considerably, largely thanks to the
influx of immigrants from Europe and other parts of the world.
Today, New York is home to about 8.4 million people. It is the largest
city in the U.S. and the center of the eighth most populous metropolitan
area in the world. New York is famously the location of the United Nations
Headquarters, and is considered one of the most culturally diverse cities
in the world.
